Gwen Cooper, 2026 Pediatric Liver Life Walk National LIVEr Champion\n\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Meet the Cooper Family<\/strong>\u2014parents, Tristan and Matt, who have courageously navigated the unexpected world of pediatric liver disease; big brother, Torin,\u00a0who has cheered on every milestone; and Gwen, their courageous daughter, liver transplant recipient and our\u00a02026 Liver Live Walk\u00ae National Pediatric Liver Champion<\/strong>.<\/p>

Gwen was born on February 15, 2024, and within days her family learned that something wasn\u2019t right. At just two weeks old, she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, setting in motion a whirlwind of urgent tests, a liver biopsy, and a major abdominal surgery, known as the\u00a0Kasai procedure<\/a>,\u00a0at only three weeks old. For a short time, there was hope, but as she approached three months post-surgery, her family learned the Kasai had been only partially successful and her only hope for survival was a lifesaving liver transplant before her second birthday.<\/p>

After being evaluated and placed on the transplant list, the Coopers received news that changed everything: a close family friend stepped forward to be Gwen\u2019s living donor and was a match! In November 2024, at just nine months old, Gwen underwent a 10-hour transplant surgery and received the gift of life from a dear family friend. Her resilience amazed her medical team, and she recently celebrated her one-year liver transplant anniversary\u2014strong, thriving, and hitting milestones that fill her family with gratitude.<\/p>

Today, Gwen loves playing with her big brother, exploring, and enjoying snacks all day. Her story reflects the strength and determination of not just one child, but of the entire Cooper family who has walked alongside her every step of the way.<\/p>

The Coopers share their journey to raise awareness, inspire hope, and support the 100 million Americans affected by liver disease. Charles Walker, 2026 Adult Liver Life Walk National LIVEr Champion<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\"\"<\/p>

Charles \u201cBuddy\u201d Walker was in complete disbelief after being diagnosed with\u00a0hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)<\/a>, a\u00a0primary liver cancer<\/a>. An American Liver Foundation (ALF) patient advocate,\u00a0living donor liver transplant<\/a>\u00a0recipient, and father of three, Buddy said, \u201cMy symptoms began in May 2023. I was experiencing extreme fatigue and had pain in my right shoulder and upper back. I visited a chiropractor and a pain management specialist, both of whom suspected this was neurological, but all those tests came back inconclusive. Then, during a routine visit with my pulmonologist in August 2023, I was having difficulty breathing and I told my doctor I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d be able to perform the required tests. After observing me for a bit, she suspected it could be congestive heart disease and suggested I go to the ER. When I arrived, they performed a multitude of scans and tests, and 28-hours later, I was diagnosed with liver cancer.\u201d\u00a0Liver cancer is the most rapidly growing cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. with rates doubling since 1980.\u00a0<\/strong>Buddy said, \u201cMy doctor thinks I developed HCC after years of living with undiagnosed\u00a0metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)<\/a>\u201d, formerly called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease\u00a0(NAFLD), a condition in which there is a buildup of extra fat in your liver cells. \u201cFor most of my life, I thought that as long as I exercised routinely, I could eat and drink whatever I wanted and still maintain a healthy lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>

As soon as the reality of his diagnosis set in, Buddy began to fight. His wife, Kathy, and three children, Kyle, Kelley and Derek, served as his motivation even when intense immunotherapy and radiation treatments left him in dire condition. Buddy said, \u201cMy daughter, Kelley, with whom I share a love of music, would send songs like,\u00a0Someone Who Loves Me<\/i>\u00a0by Sara Bareilles, and\u00a0Soon You\u2019ll be Better<\/i>\u00a0by Taylor Swift, both of which made me cry, but also spurred me on. Another time, when I was in a very dark place, I overheard my youngest son, Derek, say to his brother and sister,\u00a0I don\u2019t think this is the end for Dad, I\u2019m still betting on him.\u00a0<\/i>That statement motivated me tremendously and made me want to rally.\u201d<\/p>

Despite eradicating the cancer from his liver, Buddy was still in need of a lifesaving\u00a0liver transplant<\/a>, but because of his low\u00a0MELD score<\/a>, his only hope for survival was to find a living donor. Thankfully, his son, Kyle, was a perfect match! Kyle said, \u201cWhen I found out my dad had liver cancer, I was devastated. Initially, I did not know that living donation was an option, but once I found out, I began the screening process with the hopes of being a match. It is hard to watch someone you love and idolize live with physical pain and suffering, especially your dad. I was determined to do whatever I could to give him the opportunity to continue living a great and fulfilling life with his family and friends.\u201d On January 21, 2025, Kyle successfully donated a portion of his liver to his father, Buddy, giving him a second chance at life. \u201cLiving donors are heroes \u2013 they are literally saving lives. People don\u2019t realize how many patients will die while waiting to become eligible for liver transplant.
